THE TEAM
The Lower Mainland Debate Society was born from our own life-changing experiences with debate. It transformed the way we speak and think, and now, we want to democratize debate by making it accessible and affordable for all.

Founder/President
JOYCE LI
Joyce looks forward to another year of spreadsheet struggles in her senior year, alongside the occasional debate about the best department in LMDS against marketing. As a first speaker, she lives for the thrill of short preps. As a hobby, she can be found watching animated history or hognose snake videos.

Vice President
EMMA YU
Hi, I’m Emma Yu, and I'm in grade 12 this year. One of the most memorable parts of debate for me has been meeting my online classmates in person at tournaments for the first time. In my free time, I enjoy reading, and soup.

Co-Founder/Director of Staff
JASMINE ZHOU
Hi I'm Jasmine, I'm in grade 12 and a fun fact about me is my favourite thing to do in a debate speech is to do obscure examples or imaginary situations! some extra fun facts about me is I'm a dog mom of 1 and my special talent is sleeping over 20 hours consecutively for days on end.

Secretary
IZELA YAO
Izela is a grade 11 student from Vancouver. As someone who is too introverted to directly attack others, her most memorable experience in debate is implicitly attempting to strawman her opponents’ arguments. Other than debating, you could find her collecting crystals and gemstones

Co-Founder/Director of Marketing
HEBBE YUAN
Hebbe has been debating for five years, starting out in a small nonprofit club. Debate has shaped the way she thinks and approaches the world, inspiring her to make it more accessible to everyone. At LMDS, she designs the organization’s posts and website to better serve the community.

Director of Logistics
VANNA FENG
Vanna is a senior with a passion for debate, from chairing UBC Junior Finals to pulling all-nighters for competitions. Her favourite format is CNDF, and she is excited to be on the LMDS team to make debate a fun and rewarding experience.

Vice-Director of Logistics
EMILY QIAN
As a sophomore at Crofton House School, Emily has spent countless weekends watching chaotic finals and competing in tournaments. Debate has helped her rack up IQ points and become better at arguing (sorry Mom!), while also building lifelong friendships. You can find Emily banging gavels, café-hunting, or keeping up her 2,098-day Duolingo streak.

HR Manager
JADEN LEE
Jaden Lee is a grade 12 student who looks forward to contributing to the LMDS community. His favourite format is British Parliament, but outside of debate, he enjoys participating in MUN and case competitions. Otherwise, he can be found researching ancient history, mythology, or anything nonproductive with convoluted lore.

HR
ANNIE YE
Annie is a grade 12 excited to be returning to the executive team! Her most interesting debate was whether the world should contact aliens, since she spends most of her time in the fictional book universe. She can also be found crocheting while watching stand-up comedy.

Tournament Director
ALEX ZOU
Alex is the Tournament Director at LMDS. He currently lives in coquitlam, and is suffering through the hellhole that is the IB curriculum. Regardless, he has found success and time to enjoy debate. breaking Gold finals at doxbridge, quarters at UPenn, and finals at multople other tournaments. His favourite format is BP, but he enjoys debate as a whole. When he is not debating, you can frequently find him watching current events via youtube shorts or playing chess!
