THE TEAM

The Lower Mainland Debate Society was born from our own life-changing experiences with debate. It transformed the way we speak and think, and now, we want to democratize debate by making it accessible and affordable for all.

Vice President

DANIEL WU

As a junior at Mission San Jose High School, Daniel is honored to serve as the Vice President of LMDS this year! Ever since his first lessons in middle school, he’s loved every preposterous little moment of debating, from scrambling to come up with ideas to immediately befriending the people he just spent the last hour viciously going toe-to-toe with and complaining about how much everyone wants to go home. In his free time, Daniel loves to play horror games with his friends (where he’s usually the first to die) and make his own acapella covers of his favorite songs.

Director of Logistics

EMILY QIAN

Why collect stamps when you can collect debate rounds? As a Grade 11 student at Crofton House School, I’ve spent countless weekends watching chaotic finals, sparring with classmates, and competing in tournaments. Debate has not only helped me rack up IQ points and become better at arguing (sorry, mom…), but it has also taught me the importance of teamwork. In those frantic moments of scrambling for last-minute refutation, I’ve built unforgettable memories and lifelong friendships. Beyond debate, you can find me café-hunting, puzzling over calculus, walking my dog, banging gavels, or maintaining an (as of now!) 2,424-day Duolingo streak.

Vice-Director of Logistics

JOSHUA HUH

Joshua Huh, a junior at Vancouver College, is pleased to serve as the Vice-Director of Logistics at LMDS. He has been passionate about debate for several years and loves how every round - though unpredictable - delivers the same level of excitement every single time. In his free time, he plays Division 1 soccer and is a strong supporter for the Vancouver Whitecaps and Tottenham Hotspurs. He looks forward to contributing to another successful term!

Head of Admissions

MYREEN RANDHAWA

In her sophomore year at Fleetwood Park, Myreen Randhawa is ecstatic to serve as the Head of Admissions at LMDS. From yawning at early morning tournaments, to the eager wait for next rounds’ draw, she is beyond thankful for the opportunities, knowledge, and friends debate has created for her. Beyond debate, she teaches at Gobind Sarvar Gurmat School and pursues what seems to be infinite rabbit-holes of independent research. In her free time, Myreen can be found playing competitive trivia, attempting to read a classic novel, and writing words she finds pretty. She looks forward to welcoming all new and returning debaters to LMDS!

Co-Director of Outreach

PIYUSH SHARMA

As a senior at St. John’s Ravenscourt, Piyush might be far, but he is ready to serve as co-director of Outreach. Piyush started debating at the young age of 13 and has stayed in it ever since. Though Piyush claims that debate is a “cult”, his argument has been refuted to oblivion. As a Debate Prefect at SJR, Piyush is constantly mentoring younger students, learning and teaching new skills, and supporting his peers. Originally, Piyush fell in love with debate until he found a new frontier: Speech. Public Speaking and Debate became a passion that has taken Piyush around Canada and the world. But Piyush is not one-dimensional; with his passion for healthcare, he finds time to volunteer in hospitals around Winnipeg. Apart from Piyush’s altruistic endeavors, Piyush is excited to increase the scope of LMDS this year.

Co-Director of Outreach

MAX WANG

In his Junior year at St. Georges School, Max is thrilled to serve as the Co-Director of Outreach for the Lower Mainland Debate Society. Ever since his first tournament just two years ago, Max has truly fallen in love with everything debate has to offer—from frantically writing a first after realizing his partner fell asleep at night, to being able to travel all across North America for debate—this activity truly has so much to offer. And, while it may sound cringy, the best part is undoubtedly the people he has met along the way: indulging in Bangladeshi foods during class with friends, walking through the streets of Downtown Toronto with debaters from all over Canada—there is never a dull moment. He’s excited to be a part of LMDS this year!

Director of Finance

MEKAL UMAIR

Mekal Umair is a Grade 12 student at Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School and is pleased to serve as Director of Finance at LMDS this year. One of his favorite parts of debate has been the people he has met along the way, and he has truly cherished those friendships. Some of his most memorable experiences include playing League of Legends at 2 a.m. while prepping for Oxford WSDC, and representing John Pork at Penn WSDC. He also got an equity in his very first tournament, and he has been hooked on debate ever since. Outside of debate, Mekal co-chairs the Youth Policy Council in Calgary and optimizes Clash Royale decks. He looks forward to contributing to another great year at LMDS.

Tournament Director

KARISSA LIN

Entering her grade 11 year at Crofton House School, Karissa is delighted to serve as the Tournament Director at LMDS. Ever since her first real debate tournament roughly two years ago, Karissa’s passion for debate has grown immensely. Through all the ups, downs, and plateaus of her debate journey, she finds it all worth it for the unlikely friends she has made, the obscure political and philosophical information she has accumulated, and the occasional satisfying moments of triumph. Though she has become accustomed to eight minute speeches after 15 minutes of prep, no amount of time could allow Karissa to gather the words of gratitude for debate. Outside of debate, Karissa can be found smashing gavels at a Model UN conference, discovering niche artists on Spotify, or napping indefinitely. She looks forward to seeing every debater at LMDS’s bi-annual tournaments!

Co-Director of Curriculum

MICHAEL XU

A Grade 12 student at Southridge, Michael is excited to serve as Co-Director of Curriculum at LMDS this year. Michael began debate at the start of high school and has been obsessed with the art of sounding confident with pages of scribbled bullet points and no clue what he’s talking about ever since. Debate has taken him to tournaments across Canada and the U.S., and, surprisingly, he’s even found some success along the way. Outside of debate, Michael spends a lot of his time filmmaking, working on documentaries, shorts, and other random projects that consume far more time than expected. He also likes worldbuilding, developing games, scrolling reels, and listening to copious amounts of hyperpop. He’s looking forward to helping make the LMDS curriculum slightly more interesting this year.

Co-Director of Curriculum

ANGELA ZHENG

Angela Zheng is a Grade 11 student at Walnut Grove Secondary School and Co-Director of Curriculum at LMDS. She first fell in love with debate because it gives her an excuse to question almost everything, see an issue from a million different angles, and occasionally change her mind. She now works as an instructor at Amazing Education, where she teaches debate and public speaking and develops curriculum for students of different ages and skill levels. Angela also founded the Global Youth Foundation Debate and Speech Club, where she has taught over 50 students. Outside of debate, she plays competitive club badminton and violin and piano. She is excited to bring her love of teaching, a slightly excessive number of ideas, and plenty of iced Americanos from her local café to LMDS.

Director of Marketing

SARAH HE

Entering her third year with LMDS, Sarah is thrilled to serve as Director of Marketing! Having debated since Grade 8, debate has become a huge part of her life, giving her the opportunity to explore new perspectives, meet amazing people, and make countless memories along the way. Outside of debate, Sarah enjoys exploring new restaurants across Toronto, spending time with her toy poodle, and bringing creative ideas to life through marketing. As someone who has experienced firsthand how transformative debate can be, she hopes to share her love for the activity with more students and help make LMDS a welcoming community for debaters of all experience levels. She can’t wait to see what this year has in store!

Vice-Director of Marketing

IRENE FENG

In her junior year at Walnut Grove Secondary School, Irene is thrilled to be LMDS’ Vice-Director of Marketing! What Irene enjoys most about debate are the late tournament nights, unfunny inside jokes, and the countless memories she has made. Aside from competitive arguments, Irene loves spending time with friends, playing music with her band, and studying science. She’s excited to represent LMDS this year!
